ImportantThe Taiwan Volcano Observatory (TVO) conducts multidisciplinary research on volcanic processes, hydrothermal systems, geophysical monitoring, and volcanic hazards. Through field observations, geophysical imaging, geochemical analyses, and long-term monitoring, TVO contributes to the scientific understanding of Taiwan’s active volcanic systems and their associated risks.
Research Highlights
Magma Reservoir Beneath Northern Taiwan
Geophysical imaging studies have identified a magma reservoir beneath the Tatun Volcano Group, providing important evidence that the volcanic system remains active. The discovery has significantly improved scientific understanding of volcanic processes beneath northern Taiwan and their implications for volcanic hazards in the Taipei metropolitan region.than that beneath the Tatun Volcano Group.
Volcanic Heartbeat
Researchers observed periodic seismic signals, commonly referred to as a “volcanic heartbeat,” within the Tatun volcanic system. This phenomenon represents one of the first documented observations of such cyclic seismic activity in a dormant volcanic environment and provides new insights into fluid movement within volcanic hydrothermal systems.
Volcanic Brontides and Infrasound
Integrated seismic and infrasound observations have revealed complex acoustic signals generated by fumarolic activity. These volcanic brontides provide valuable information on gas transport processes and interactions between hydrothermal vents within the volcanic field.
Recent Eruption History of the Tatun Volcano Group
Geological investigations have demonstrated that volcanic activity within the Tatun Volcano Group continued into the Holocene. Evidence for eruptions approximately 5,000–6,000 years ago has contributed to the current classification of the volcanic system as active.
