Monitoring Network

Monitoring Network
The Taiwan Volcano Observatory (TVO) operates an integrated monitoring network across the Tatun Volcano Group and Kueishantao (Turtle Island). By combining geophysical, geochemical, and hydrothermal observations, the network continuously monitors volcanic activity and provides essential data for scientific research, hazard assessment, and early warning.

Monitoring Categories

Seismic Monitoring

Broadband seismic stations continuously record earthquakes, volcanic tremors, and other seismic signals associated with subsurface volcanic processes. These observations provide important information on magma movement, fault activity, and hydrothermal systems.

Infrasound Monitoring

Infrasound sensors detect low-frequency acoustic waves generated by fumarolic activity and atmospheric disturbances. These measurements help characterize vent activity and the interaction between volcanic and atmospheric processes.

GNSS Monitoring

Continuous GNSS stations measure ground deformation with millimeter-level precision. Surface displacement data provide valuable constraints on subsurface pressure changes and volcanic deformation.

Volcanic Gas Monitoring

Geochemical observations include measurements of volcanic gases such as CO₂、H₂S、SO₂ as well as ³He/⁴He isotope ratios. Variations in gas composition provide important insights into magmatic and hydrothermal processes.

Hot Spring Geochemistry

Regular sampling of hot springs is used to monitor pH, electrical conductivity, major ions, and dissolved chemical species. These observations help track changes in hydrothermal circulation and fluid sources.

Ground Temperature Monitoring

Ground-temperature sensors installed in fumarolic areas continuously record thermal variations associated with hydrothermal activity and changes in heat flow.

Station Distribution

Tatun Volcano Group

The monitoring network in the Tatun Volcano Group includes approximately 40 seismic stations together with GNSS sites, gas-monitoring stations, and geochemical sampling locations distributed throughout the volcanic field.

Kueishantao (Turtle Island)

On Kueishantao, TVO operates five seismic stations along with GNSS receivers, ground-temperature sensors, and additional monitoring instruments. Offshore observations complement the island-based network and provide information on submarine volcanic activity.

Monitoring Data & Resources

Selected monitoring data and activity information are available through the TVO monitoring platform. The platform provides access to seismic observations, monitoring summaries, and other operational products that support volcano monitoring and hazard assessment. Some real-time monitoring products are currently provided in Chinese. Researchers interested in accessing specific datasets or exploring scientific collaborations are encouraged to contact TVO directly for further information.
