About TVO

The Taiwan Volcano Observatory -Tatun (TVO) is dedicated to the long-term monitoring of Taiwan's active volcanoes through continuous observations and multidisciplinary scientific studies. By integrating geophysical and geochemical observations, TVO improves the understanding of volcanic activity and provides scientific information that supports volcanic hazard assessment, emergency preparedness, and public safety. Taiwan is located at the convergent boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate, where active volcanism occurs in northern Taiwan and offshore northeastern Taiwan. TVO focuses on two active volcanic systems: the Tatun Volcano Group, located immediately north of the Taipei metropolitan area, and Kueishantao (Turtle Island), Taiwan's youngest active volcanic island. Since its establishment in 2011, TVO has developed an integrated volcano monitoring network that combines multiple observation techniques to continuously monitor changes in volcanic activity. Long-term monitoring provides valuable insights into volcanic unrest, hydrothermal activity, volcanic gas emissions, and subsurface processes, while contributing to scientific research and hazard assessment. Over the past two decades, geological, geophysical, and geochemical studies have significantly improved the understanding of the Tatun Volcano Group. Evidence from Holocene eruptive deposits, persistent volcanic gas emissions, active hydrothermal systems, and geophysical imaging of subsurface magma reservoirs indicates that the Tatun Volcano Group remains an active volcanic system. Beyond volcano monitoring, TVO promotes scientific research, international collaboration, and public outreach to advance the understanding of Taiwan's active volcanoes and support the sustainable development of volcano science.
